Mexico Mexican 7" discography / London EPs

London Records were pressed and distributed by Peerless Records in Mexico in the 60's & 70's.
Up to 1971, no less than 17 EPs were released, some with unique covers and tracklistings.
The Rolling Stones - Route 66 - London EPP 643 • Mexico discography: London EPs
Catalogue numbers start by EPP [Extended Play Peerless] but labels never bear the Peerless logo.
It is commonly assumed than EPs in hard covers are originals while those in soft covers are reissues.Well, this is a little more complex than that...
Before 1970, original EPs were issued in hard covers, with labels bearing a silver horizontal line in the middle [type I labels - as above]. The London label could be 'curly' as well [see next] on labels.
The Rolling Stones - 'curly' logo • Mexico discography: London EPsMost EPs were reissued many times during the 60's and later, up to 1979, whether in hard covers or in soft 'fold-out' insert covers [also called 'soft' covers]. Some reissues, from 1974 to 1979, bear their date of re-release engraved into the record's groove].
Beyond their textures, covers may offer graphic variations like a new Peerless logo, titling or colors changes, housing many labels variations.

Three main types of labels can be determined - besides very rarely seen promotional white labels.
But the irregular use of Serif & Sans-Serif fonts for the band name on a given label type makes the topic a bit more complex.

The Rolling Stones - Times Roman typography • Mexico discography: London EPsThe Rolling Stones - Arial typography • Mexico discography: London EPs

Therefore, to the main type of label has been added the letter 'a' for 'Arial' [Sans Serif] or 'g' for 'Times Roman' [Serif] [eg: II-a means labels of type II with band name in Arial].

But this is not it. Further variations may apply for such a definition of label, as to whether the two copyright lines mention a licence from Decca or London.

Reason for this is unknown. Note that it also happens with type I labels [see rim lines].

The Rolling Stones - Route 66 - London EPP 643 • Mexico discography: London EPsIf the last three numbers are reissues of the UK EPs, the 14 first EPs are all exclusive compilations, whereas their artworks are mostly inspired from the US discography.

Artwork for the first EP 'Route 66' [EPP 627] is a miniature of the first US LP cover with an added 'Peerless' logo - same on both sides.
Despite its 1964' tracklisting, this EP was first issued in 1965. It was reissued once with labels of type II, but not in soft PS unlike most of the original EPs. This is one of the rarest Mexican releases.

Just about every possible label variations were experimented among the numerous issues of 'Satisfaction' [EPP 643], the second EP, coupled with 'The Last Time' and oddly 'I'm Alright'.
Back cover here [and for the next EP] is different from front, reserved for the tracklisting, contrarily to most other EPs.

The Rolling Stones - Route 66 - London EPP 643 • Mexico discography: London EPsThe Rolling Stones - Satisfaction - London EPP 643 • Mexico discography: London EPsB-side labels almost always misspell 'Thewest Coast Promotion Man' & 'I' All Right'.

The Rolling Stones - Satisfaction - London EPP 643 - reissue • Mexico discography: London EPsAlso, as for a few other numbers, some late 70's reissues in soft PS bear the new Peerless Records logo on cover instead of the old London one [less sought-after, these are actually rarer than the hard covers].

This EP is the occasion to notice that the printing quality may vary depending on the issues: indeed, the whole picture could get more or less dark, or reddish, or even slightly blurry - defaults that will be met for other EPs as well.

The US picture cover of the single of the same name was used for 'Get Off Of My Cloud' [EPP 669] which was coupled in Mexico with two tracks from the UK EP 'Five By Five'.

The Rolling Stones - Get Off Of My Cloud - London EPP 669 - soft back cover detail • Mexico discography: London EPsFirst labels sport the old London 'curly' logo. Some variations in labels also depend of the production credits' position. As far as picture sleeves, they may only differ for a small difference in a line at the bottom of their backs.

The Rolling Stones - As Tears Go By - London EPP 679 • Mexico discography: London EPs The Rolling Stones - As Tears Go By - London EPP 679 • Mexico discography: London EPs

'As Tears Go By' [EPP 679] is an EP directly inspired from the third UK export one 'She Said Yeah'.
It has a similar cover [the Gered Mankowitz shot used for the 'December's Children' album], the same B-side, but the song that gives its title to the EP replaced 'Gotta Get Away' - note that 'As Tears Go By' also was issued as a single parallely, exclusively backed with 'Talkin' About You'.
Reissues of this EP in soft covers bear the new Peerless 'P' logo.

The Rolling Stones - 19th Nervous Breakdown - London EPP 713 • Mexico discography: London EPsThe fifth EP '19th Nervous Breakdown' [EPP 713] is still using a Mankowitz photograph, but for an exclusive artwork this time. 'The Last Time' appears here for the second time on an EP since 'Satisfaction', along with its single B-side 'Play With Fire'.
The Rolling Stones - 19th Nervous Breakdown - London EPP 713 - reissue • Mexico discography: London EPs
Also the hard picture cover exists with rectangle gold backgrounds for titles, while the soft one is in black & white.
Note that this EP is systematically misspelt '19the Nervous Breakdown' on cover, an error which has been corrected on all labels except for the white promotional ones.

Paint It, Black' [EPP 721] also has a recurent misspelling: all issues but the very first one being misspelt 'Paint In Black'.
The Rolling Stones - Paint It, Black - London EPP 721 • Mexico discography: London EPsIts picture cover is the same as the US single of the same name, but its coupling, again with older titles like 'Susie-Q', remains quite unique. Strangely, this latter track was parallely issued as an exclusive single [8619] consecutive to the 'Paint It, Black' one, coupled with 'Congratulations' [also from this EP].
As for some previous EPs, minor differences in labels also occured here as far as the position and/or presence of productions credits.

'Mother's Little Helper' [EPP 752], in the same vein, remixed the two tracks of the then current single with old numbers. This EP also revamped the US cover of the single of the same name.
Having sold badly, it rarely appears on the market, and is in the top 10 of the Mexican rarities. Its reissue into soft picture sleeve is unlikely.

The exclusive 'Ruby Tuesday' [EPP 835] EP compiles four tracks from the album 'Between The Buttons' and also uses the album cover sporting the à la buttons 1967 Rolling Stones logo.
The Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday - London EPP 835 • Mexico discography: London EPsA funny misprint has the Jagger-Richards author credits flipped.

The Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday - London EPP 835 • Mexico discography: London EPsThe Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday - London EPP 835 • Mexico discography: London EPsSome copies have titles on cover printed over an extra grey background for contrast purposes which is more or less obvious.
This EP was reissued with a soft cover looking like the hard one in 1976 and with the new Peerless 'P' logo on sleeve in 1980.
With 'Satisfaction' [EPP 643], this EP is the most common of all the Mexican EPs [for who does not mind a particular variation].

The Rolling Stones - Heart Of Stone - London EPP 899 • Mexico discography: London EPs'Heart Of Stone' appeared on the flip side of the single 'Under The Boardwalk' in 1967 which is a Mexican-only release. The EP of the same name [EPP 899] compiled both tracks, with 'Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby...' and - why not - the original British B-side of 'Satisfaction' 'The Spider & The Fly'.
Rare white promo labels also exist for this EP whom nice cover was a reduction of the 'Flowers' compilation album [but has nothing to do with].
As the previous EP, it got reissued in soft picture sleeve, with the old or new Peerless logo.

The Rolling Stones - 2000 Light Years From Home - London EPP 938 • Mexico discography: London EPsThe next EP [EPP 938] coupled the US single '2000 Light Years From Home' with 'In Another Land' and 'We Love You''s B-side 'Dandelion' for a great psychedelic compilation.
The Rolling Stones - 2000 Light Years From Home - London EPP 938 • Mexico discography: London EPs
Its colorful picture sleeve was reworked from the US 7" cover with an extra Spanish titling. Unfortunately, some copies have the center picture by Michael Cooper quite blurry. Many labels variations exist, notably with the misspellings 'Sh's A Rainbow' & 'Jandelion'. The cardboard picture sleeve itself can be found with the Peerless logo below or above the artwork's white lines.
Note that if this EP can be found without too much efforts, the single of the same name [London 9108] is very scarce.

The Rolling Stones - Jumpin' Jack Flash - London EPP 1001 • Mexico discography: London EPs'Jumpin' Jack Flash' [EPP 1001] - or 'Jack Flash' as Spanish puts it out - compiled the single of the same name with 'We Love You' and quite strangely [for timing reasons?] the old number 'Cry To Me'.
Its cover is the famous David Bailey shot of the band disguised, as in most countries.
The Rolling Stones - Jumpin' Jack Flash - London EPP 1001 • Mexico discography: London EPsSome soft covers reissues have titles and catalogue number in red, while some other bear the new Peerless logo.

Its follower 'Sympathy For The Devil' [EPP 1164] is the kind of essential exclusive EP that collectors crave for, with a nice unique black & white picture cover - also used for a Mexican LP - and a 1st class original tracklisting. The main track had already been coupled with 'Prodigal Son' for the original single [9466] to which was added 'Street Fighting Man' here.
Again, reissues in soft cover with the new Peerless logo exist.

The Rolling Stones - Peerless • Mexico discography: London EPs'No Expectations' - the B-side of 'Street Fighting Man' - was in fact to be found on the next EP 'Honky Tonk Women' [EPP 1184], along with 'Dear Doctor', still from 'Beggars Banquet', and - again why not? - 'Sad Day'.

Then came the 3-track EP 'Let It Bleed' [EPP 1233], which title track was also issued as a single [c/w 'Monkey Man']. With its unique cover, a shrink of the artwork of the album cover of the same name designed by Robert Brownjohn [cake by chef Delia Smith!], 'Deja Que Sangre' is one of the most sought-after EP from Mexico.

The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed - London EPP 1233 • Mexico discography: London EPs The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed - London EPP 1233 • Mexico discography: London EPsThe Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed - London EPP 1233 • Mexico discography: London EPs It actually contains a 2:53 edit of 'Let it Bleed'. Most hard covers have the simbolo de perfeccion' note below the Peerless logo, but versions exist without.
This the last EP issued with type I-a labels.
Reissues in soft wrap-around picture sleeves either miss the tracklisting on cover or have the new Peerless logo on.

The last three EPs were late issues of the original British EPs in their export tracklisting versions - that is to say missing 'Route 66' for 'Got Live If You Want It!' [EPP 1470] and '2120 South Michigan Avenue' on 'If You Need Me' [EPP 1472].
Picture covers are similar to the UK, back as front, with titles printed on top of the artwork, and London / Peerless logos replacing the Decca one of course.
Despite poor sales, these three EPs in cardboard covers were pressed three times and soon became collectable.
