France French 7" discography / The RSR - Warner years [1971-1977]
The Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar - RS19100 • France discography: The RSR - Warner years [1971-1977]

Rolling Stones Records logoFrom 1971 to 1977, Rolling Stones Records is distributed in France by WEA Filipacchi.
One EP ['Brown Sugar'] and 7 singles are issued, offering once again many variations, plus two promotional singles in special RSR / WEA company sleeves.
Tumbling Dice signAll stock 7"s were distributed into PS except 'Tumbling Dice' which was hosted into a thick tongue-shaped sleeve (French printed). The 'Hot Stuff' PS is exclusive to France.
None of the public releases are very rare but collectors will have tough times finding the fragile tongue die-cut sleeve in top shape, or a near mint copy of 'Angie' for instance.

A 2-track jukebox single was issued to promote the debut Rolling Stones Records EP 'Brown Sugar' [RS 19100] whom artwork was nearly the same worldwide.

From now on, the famous tongue logo - designed by a young John Pasche at Jagger's request - will be the band's stamp on every Stones' related production.

The next single effort, 'Tumbling Dice' [RS 19103], was distributed into a custom titled die-cut 'tongue' company sleeve. Two slight different pressings were made in France, both originals from 1972 and equally common / rare.

As in most countries, 'Angie' [RS 19105] was number 1 in the French charts, which explains the number of variations one can meet. Two 'nude' covers were produced - one with titles on front, the other untitled - and several labels prints.

'Angie' also was the first single to appear both on yellow paper labels and plastic green labels. All the following singles until 1976 - except 'Star Star' which was exclusively available on yellow labels - will be pressed on these two label types.

As the band could not play in France during the 1973 European tour, the Belgian Brussels and Antwerpen shows dates only were advertised at the back of the 'Angie' cover. Besides, Belgium, which did not press any Rolling Stones singles in these years, will import most of the next French releases.

The second single from the album 'Goats Head Soup' was to be 'Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)' [RS 19108] but some countries picked 'Star Star' instead, backing it with 'Heartbreaker'. France was one of them and produced a typical cheap 70's artwork, yet unique, with a back promoting - or not - a national radio program. Two different yellow labels were made as well.

Next came 'It's Only Rock'n'Roll' [RS 19114], coupled with the non-album track 'Through The Lonely Nights', whom textured cover's artwork was shared with Spain.

Another unique picture sleeve in textured paper was made for 'Ain't Too Proud To Beg' [RS 19116] in 1974, a cover that did not really well in the charts.

'Fool To Cry' [RS 19121] was the first single from the LP 'Black & Blue' in 1976, and was first released with a special promo-only number [PRO 51] in a die-cut company sleeve [rather hard-to-find]. The stock copy lists the 1976' tour dates on back cover and is very common, yet 3 labels variations exist.

Three types of WEA Filipacchi Music company sleeves were issued in France between 1972 and 1976 sporting the RSR logo (blue or black).

The Rolling Stones - Hot Stuff - RS 19123 • France discography: The RSR - Warner years [1971-1977]The most exclusive* French release from these years remains 'Hot Stuff' [RS 19123], shortly released after 'Fool To Cry', in a unique 'live' cover. Its rear promotes the back catalogue from the band, misspelling 'Exile on Man Street'.
* 'Hot Stuff' only made it as well as a 7" in the US, as a promo-only single.
