1965  The Rolling Stones UK and US Charts singles  Satisfaction

'(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction' was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards in 1965 and produced by Andrew Loog Oldham. The song is notable for Richards's three-note guitar riff which opens and drives the song, and for the lyrics, which include references to sexual intercourse and a theme of anti-commercialism. First released as a single in the US on June 6th, with 'The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man' on B-side, the song gave the band their first number one in the country. At the time, Decca England was busy promoting the 'Got Live If You Want It!' EP, and the UK single - coupled with 'The Spider And The Fly' - would only be released on August 20, peaking at #1 in their native country, for the fourth time.

The song is considered to be one of the all-time great rock songs. Keith Richards states that he came up with the guitar riff for the song in his sleep, waking up in the middle of the night, recording the riff and the words "I can't get no satisfaction" on a cassette recorder and promptly falling back to sleep. He would later describe the tape as: "two minutes of 'Satisfaction' and 40 minutes of me snoring."
He and Jagger finished writing the song at the Jack Tar Harrison Hotel in Clearwater, Florida, in May 1965. Jagger wrote most of the lyrics after being confined to their Clearwater hotel rooms and not permitted to play.

The track was first recorded on 10 May 1965 at Chess Studios in Chicago - a version featuring Brian Jones on harmonica. The group re-recorded it two days later at RCA Studios in Hollywood, with a different beat and the Gibson Maestro fuzzbox adding sustain to the sound of the guitar riff.
While in its eighth week on the American charts, the single was certified their first gold record award by the RIAA [Recording Industry Association of America] for selling more than half a million copies in the USA.

About 'Satisfaction', Jagger has said: "It was the song that really made The Rolling Stones, changed us from just another band into a huge, monster band... It has a very catchy title. It has a very catchy guitar riff. It has a great guitar sound, which was original at that time. And it captures a spirit of the times, which is very important in those kinds of songs... Which was alienation." Richards claimed that the song's riff could be heard in half of the songs that the Rolling Stones had produced, saying that "there is only one song - it's just the variations you come up with."

Satisfaction
[Mick Jagger / Keith Richards]

I can't get no satisfaction
I can't get no satisfaction
'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try
I can't get no, I can't get no

When I'm drivin' in my car
And that man comes on the radio
He's tellin' me more and more
About some useless information
Supposed to fire my imagination
I can't get no, oh no no no
Hey hey hey, that's what I say

The Rolling Stones - Satisfaction UK sheet musicI can't get no satisfaction
I can't get no satisfaction
'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try
I can't get no, I can't get no

When I'm watchin' my TV
And that man comes on to tell me
How white my shirts can be
But he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't
smoke
The same cigarettes as me
I can't get no, oh no no no
Hey hey hey, that's what I say

I can't get no satisfaction
I can't get no girl reaction
'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try
I can't get no, I can't get no

When I'm ridin' round the world
And I'm doin' this and I'm signing that
And I'm tryin' to make some girl
Who tells me baby better come back later next week
'Cause you see I'm on losing streak
I can't get no, oh no no no
Hey hey hey, that's what I say

I can't get no, I can't get no
I can't get no satisfaction
No satisfaction, no satisfaction, no satisfaction

The Spider And The Fly
[Mick Jagger / Keith Richards]

Sittin' thinkin' sinkin' drinkin'
Wondering what I'd do when I'm through tonight
The Rolling Stones - Satisfaction - Decca F 12220 - UK Smoking moping, maybe just hopin'
Some little girl will pass on by
Don't wanna be alone but I love my girl at home
I remember what she said
She said, "My, my, my don't tell lies, keep fidelity in your head
My my my, don't tell lies. When you're done you should go to bed
Don't say hi, like a spider to a fly
Jump right ahead and you're dead"

Sit up, fed up, low down go round
Down to the bar at the place I'm at
Sitting drinking, supereficially thinking
About the rinsed-out blonde on my left
Then I said, "hi" like a spider to a fly
Remembering what my little girl said

She was common, flirty, she looked about thirty
I would have run away but I was on my own
She told me later she's a machine operator
She said she liked the way I held the microphone
I said my, my, like the spider to the fly
Jump right ahead in my web

About the UK B-side 'The Spider And The Fly':

Mick Jagger said in a 1995 interview with Rolling Stone, "I wasn't really that mad about it, but when you listen to it on record, it still holds up quite interestingly as a blues song. It's a Jimmy Reed blues with British pop-group words, which is an interesting combination: a song somewhat stuck in a time warp."
Of particular note is the early use of the Rolling Stones' "ancient form of weaving" by guitarists Keith Richards and Brian Jones. Jagger performs harmonica on the recording while Jack Nitzsche provides percussion and keyboards.
The Stones have performed 'The Spider And The Fly' twice on tour, in both 1965 and 1966 and during their 1995 leg of the Voodoo Lounge Tour.
A studio 'reworking' of the song was included on their 1995 live album 'Stripped' and features the notable and amusing switch of the female subject of the song's age from thirty to fifty - a nod at the Stones' own advancing ages.

The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man
[Nanker Phelge]

Well I'm waiting at the bus stop in downtown L.A.
Well I'm waiting at the bus stop in downtown L.A.
But I'd much rather be on a boardwalk on Broadway
Well I'm sitting here thinkin' just how sharp I am
Well I'm sitting here thinkin' just how sharp I am
I'm an under assistant west coast promo man

Well I promo groups when they come into town
Well I promo groups when they come into town
Well they laugh at my toupee, they're sure to put me down

Well I'm sitting here thinking just how sharp I am
Well I'm sitting here thinking just how sharp I am
I'm a necessary talent behind every rock and roll band

Yeah, I'm sharp
I'm really, really sharp
I sure do earn my pay
Sitting on the beach every day, yeah
I'm real real sharp, yes I am
I got a Corvette and a seersucker suit
Yes I have

Here comes the bus, uh oh
I thought I had a dime
Where's my dime
I know I have a dime somewhere , I'm pretty sure...

I have two clerks
I break my ass every day
Here comes the bus
I know I have a dime somewhere
I'm so sharp
You won't believe how sharp I am
Don't laugh at me

Mick Jagger: lead vocals
Keith Richards: guitar
Brian Jones: harmonica
Bill Wyman: bass
Charlie Watts: drums
Ian Stewart: piano

About the US B-side 'The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man':
This track, recorded at the same time than 'Satisfaction', was its B-side not only in the US but mostly worldwide, apart from the UK.
Two versions exist, the short one missing the last verse which includes the line 'I break my ass everyday'. The long version with extra lyrics is to be found on the early pressings on some singles [eg. the original Australian issue Decca Y7237], on the early pressings of the 'Out Of Our Heads' album, or on the compilation 'Rolling Stones Singles Collection - The London Years'.
