1967  The Rolling Stones UK and US Charts singles  Let's Spend The Night Together

'Let's Spend The Night Together' was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Extracted from the album 'Between The Buttons', the track was released as a single both in the UK and the US. However, due to the then-controversial nature of the lyrics, most US radio stations opted to play the flip side 'Ruby Tuesday' instead which peaked #1 at the charts while 'Let's Spend The Night Together' only reached #55.

In one of the more famous examples of musical censorship, on The Ed Sullivan Show, the band was initially refused permission to perform the number. Sullivan himself told Jagger, "Either the song goes or you go". A compromise was reached to substitute the words "let's spend some time together" in place of "let's spend the night together"; Jagger agreed to change the lyrics but ostentatiously rolled his eyes at the TV camera while singing them. Ed Sullivan announced that the Rolling Stones would be banned from performing on his show again.

About the track, Richards said: "Yeah, I played piano on it, and then I overdubbed the guitar. To me that song was a progression from ''Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby'. It was like 'Have You Seen Your Mother' was a step toward 'Let's Spend The Night Together', because the chords and the structure of the song are very similar. And the fact that I'd wrote them both on piano, one was almost the same as the other".

The Rolling Stones - Let's Spend The Night Together - live, 1983 [RSR 112 DJ]A live version of 'Let's Spend The Night Together' taken from the album 'Still Life' would be released in 1982 to promote the movie of the same name by Hal Ashby on the 1981 American tour.
In April 2006, for their first-ever performance in China, authorities prohibited the group from performing the song due to its 'suggestive lyrics'.

Let's Spend The Night Together
[Mick Jagger / Keith Richards]

My, My, My, My
Don't you worry 'bout what's on your mind (Oh my)
I'm in no hurry I can take my time (Oh my)
I'm going red and my tongue's getting tied (tongues's getting tied)
I'm off my head and my mouth's getting dry.
I'm high, But I try, try, try (Oh my)
Let's spend the night together
Now I need you more than ever
Let's spend the night together now
The Rolling Stones - Let's Spend The Night Together US sheet music
I feel so strong that I can't disguise (oh my)
Let's spend the night together
But I just can't apologize (oh no)
Let's spend the night together
Don't hang me up just to let me down (don't let me down)
We could have fun just groovin' around around and around
Let's spend the night together
Now I need you more than ever
Let's spend the night together

Let's spend the night together
Now I need you more than ever
You know I'm smiling baby
You need some guiding baby
Now I need you more than ever
Let's spend the night together
Let's spend the night together now

This doesn't happen to me ev'ryday (oh my)
Let's spend the night together
No excuses offered anyway (oh my)
Let's spend the night together
I'll satisfy your every need (every need)
And I now know you will satisfy me
Let's spend the night together
Now I need you more than ever
Let's spend the night together now

Ruby Tuesday
[Mick Jagger / Keith Richards]

She would never say where she came from
Yesterday dont matter if its gone
While the sun is bright
Or in the darkest night
No one knows
She comes and goes

The Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday - Swedish sheet musicGoodbye, ruby tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still Im gonna miss you...

Dont question why she needs to be so free
Shell tell you its the only way to be
She just cant be chained
To a life where nothings gained
And nothings lost
At such a cost

Theres no time to lose, I heard her say
Catch your dreams before they slip away
Dying all the time

Lose your dreams
And you will lose your mind.
Aint life unkind?

Goodbye, ruby tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still Im gonna miss you...

"'Ruby Tuesday' is a wonderful song," Mick Jagger told Rolling Stone in 1995. "It's just a nice melody, really. And a lovely lyric. Neither of which I wrote, but I always enjoy singing it." Bill Wyman states in his book 'Rolling with the Stones' that the song was completely written by Keith Richards. However, Marianne Faithfull recalls it differently; according to her, Brian Jones presented an early version of this melody to the rest of the Rolling Stones. According to Keith Richards autobiography, 'Life', the song was written about his girlfriend Linda Keith.

The Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday - live, 1991 [CBS 656892]A concert rendition of the song from the Steel Wheels / Urban Jungle tour was released on the band's 1991 concert album 'Flashpoint' and a single in the UK, Holland, and Australia.
All post-2002 ABKCO reissues of the studio version of 'Ruby Tuesday' on CD are missing a vocal overdub in the chorus.
