In 1978, the band signs for an EMI worldwide distribution deal, except for the US & Canada where Rolling Stones Records will still be distributed by the Atlantic group. All commercial releases are now supposed to be distributed into picture sleeves. A famous cover is issued for 'Beast Of Burden' [RS 19309] which is soon banned and withdrawn. 'Before They Make Me Run' is issued as a promo-only PS single. The US [and Canada] are the only
country to issue 'Shattered' [RS 19310]. Some 'oldies' reissues [cat.
#s starting by 'RS 13xxx'] will see the light of the day in the
early 80's and 'Miss You' will ultimately be reissued with a new B-side in 1984.

'Miss You' [RS 19307] was the first single from the 'Some Girls' album and the biggest hit single from these years, peaking at #1 in the US charts.
Parallely to the 7" release, a 12" maxi-single was pressed containing the Bob Clearmountain 8-minutes extended remix [which would only be reissued on CD along with 'Don't Stop' in 2002].
A very scarce promotional only issue of the B-side 'Far Away Eyes' was pressed with mono and stereo version of this song with the same catalogue number.
If some previous singles were reissued with an 'oldies' note on labels, new numbers were assigned from now on for such reissues, and 'Miss You' / 'Far Away Eyes' was reissued in 1981 as RS 13219.
The picture sleeve made for 'Miss You' is very common, yet two extremely rare variations exist: one has titles using a complete different typography, the other is a green version of the otherwise pink cover.
Released by the end of August 1978, 'Beast Of Burden' [RS 19109] was the second single extracted from 'Some Girls' in North America [and Japan], while Europe opted for 'Respectable'. Both singles bore 'When The Whip Comes Down' on their flip sides, recorded from a live show at the Detroit Masonic Temple on July 6, 1978.
If, for collectors, the record itself is only worth a few dollars, the infamous picture sleeve depicting a lion sit on a woman is extremely sought after, as it has been immediately withdrawn. Only a few hundreds survived and it has been countrefeited several times since the early 80's. Sheet music only would offer the same artwork, but again are quite rare now.

A live version of the song was recorded during their 1981 American Tour and would be released as a B-side to 'Going To A Go-Go' in 1982.
'Before They Make Me Run' [PR 316] was a rare promo-only single - on yellow labels - coming in a unique picture sleeve [Keith Richards pictured by Annie Leibovitz].
Beware of counterfeits, generally more contrasted than the original and missing the pupil's spark.
The third single from 'Some Girls', 'Shattered' [RS 19310] was only released as a single in the US [and Canada] and reached #31 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979.
Backed with the non-album track 'Everything Is Turning To Gold' [released later on the compilation album 'Sucking In The Seventies'], its unique 'punk designed' PS makes it an attractive and affordable collector's item.
'Shattered' was the last single pressed by PRC Recording Corp., Richmond, IN.
A very scarce 1-sided test pressing was made for 'Everything Is Turning To Gold' by Specialty Records Corp., the pressing plant which would initially make tests for each single.
Released as the album's lead on June 20, 1980, 'Emotional Rescue' [RS 20001] peaked at #3 in the US.
The song, famous for its disco beat and falsetto singing,
was also promoted through a 12" edition, and a video containing a constant strobing 'thermo-vision' effect.
'Down In The Hole' was the B-side of this single worldwide. The picture sleeve's titling artwork was similar to England's,
but the back was unique to North America with a b&w picture of the band on a black background.
Just as for 'Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo' before, some copies were exported to Belgium where a blue special art titled sleeve [rare] was officially produced for local distribution.
As 'Miss You' also, this single would be reissued a year later as an 'oldie' with a new catalogue number [RS 13227].
'She's So Cold' [RS 21001], coupled with 'Send It To Me' , second - and last - single from the new album 'Emotional Rescue' would rank at #26.
The lyrics of the song containing the word 'god damn', promo copies
offered both the 'god damn' and the 'cleaned up' versions.
The existence of rare one-sided test pressings for the song 'Dance', made in November 1980 and bearing the next catalogue number 'RS 21002', show that a third single from 'Emotional Rescue' was probably scheduled on 7" - as in England - but the song only made it on a 12" single in company sleeve.
'Start Me Up' was originally recorded during the 1975 sessions for the album 'Black & Blue'. First cut as a reggae-rock track, it was archived after dozens of takes. Further recording attempts with a rougher sound were made during the 'Some Girls' & 'Emotional Rescue' sessions under the working titles 'Never Stop' and 'Start It Up', but it's only with the insistance of producer Chris Kimsey that it eventually found its way in 1981.
Released as the first single of the new album 'Tattoo You', 'Start Me Up' [RS 21003] would peak at #2 in the US charts, just in time to open the American tour [which would be subject to two more singles, and a movie by Hal Ashby the year after].
As everywhere else in the world, the hit song was coupled with 'No Use In Crying', and distributed in the 'furry heel' picture cover [whom colors were close to black & white in America].
A promo 12" issue [PR 347] was also pressed, distributed within the same PS.
By the end of 1981, as the band was touring the country, 'Waiting On A Friend' [RS 21004] was lauched, reaching #13 in the charts, famous for its video directed by Lindsay-Hogg and featuring Peter Tosh and Mick Jagger sitting on a stoop and waiting on Keith Richards.
Despite its moderate success, this single was reissued a year later with a new catalogue number [RS 13238].
On the B-side, 'Little T&A', sung by Keith Richards, originally came out from the 'Emotional Rescue' sessions and was reworked by the band in mid-1981. The track would be played during the 1981 American tour, Keith Richards solo tours in the late eighties, and the 'Bigger Bang' tour in 2006.

More specific to the US was the third single from 'Tattoo You', 'Hang Fire' [RS 21300], which reached number 20 on the US chart. It is notable that this track was never released as a single in the UK [whereas the band was touring the country when it was out in the US], maybe due its satirical lyrics directed squarely at England's economic decline through the 1970s, but it was also out in Canada, Australia, New Zealand or Brazil.

On the flip side, 'Neighbours', inspired by Keith Richards' eviction from his New York City apartment and known for being one of the rare 'Tattoo You''s tracks which wasn't an outtake from earlier recording sessions, was supported by a funny music video featuring the band in an apartment building setting [a take-off on the Alfred Hitchcock film 'Rear Window'].
As such video and the existence of test pressings ['Neighbours' c/w 'Tops' and 'Tops' as 1-sided] suggest, 'Neighbours' could originally have been scheduled as a single on its own, backed with 'Tops', before it eventually became the flip of the other rocker 'Hang Fire' [RS 21300] in early 1982.
No picture sleeve was ever issued for this single though, which was distributed into the same thick tongue shaped company sleeve that was designed for 'Tumbling Dice' [RS 19103] in 1972.
The band was in the middle of its European tour when 'Going To A Gogo' [RS 21301] - a Smokey Robinson's cover - came out as the first single from the live album 'Still Life (American Concert 1981), back with a live version of 'Beast Of Burden'.
The track reached #25 in the United States and #26 in the British charts.
Its picture sleeve was the same worldwide - a miniature of the album's artwork - yet for some reason the US version bore an extra red stripe in the bottom [pink in Canada].
Catalogue numbering system changed with the second live single from 'Still Life', 'Time Is On My Side' [RS 9-99978], which track reached #62 on the UK singles chart but did not make it in the US.
The North American picture sleeve was slightly different [b&w with red titling and inversing front & back] than the otherwise worldwide artwork used for this release.
Note that the UK promo-only single 'Let's Spend The Night Together' c/w 'Start Me Up' (live) [RSR 112 DJ] made in June 1983 to promote the Hal Ashby's movie of the same name [US American show] was never released in the United States [but was in Mexico, and Japan, in unique PS].
The next single 'Undercover (Of The Night)'[RS 7-99813] would give its title to the new studio album it was extracted from, its lyrics telling of political corruption in South America.
Ranking at #9 in November 1983 in the US chart, it was distributed into a complete different artwork PS than its European counterpart [directly inspired from the album's cover] in both the US and Canada.
Additionally, a special dance remix version of the song was available on 12" [0-96978] within the same artwork.
Its follower 'She Was Hot' [RS 7-99788], in January 1984 only reached #44, despite a popular Julien Temple's video starring Anita Morris, but its picture cover also was offering a unique North American artwork featuring Marilyn Monroe's face, that had nothing to envy to the cheesy European cover.
On the flip side was 'I Think I'm Going Mad', a nice outtake from the 'Emotional Rescue' sessions, unreleased on album.
Promo issues featured the short and long versions of 'She Was Hot'. A promo-only issue of this single also exists on 12" [PR574] distributed into a die-cut neutral sleeve [contains the same tracks as the 7" stock copy].
Whereas most countries reissued the 1971' single 'Brown Sugar' / 'Bitch' in 1984 to support the 'Rewind 71-84' compilation album, the US only reissued 'Miss You' [RS 7-99724] in July 1984, coupled with a new B-side, 'Too Tough', extracted from the 'Undercover' album.
The stock copy of this single, distributed into neutral or company sleeve, was most likely withdrawn as it is extremely rare and pricy nowadays [both the 'ar' and 'sp' pressings],
whereas its promo versions featuring 'Miss You' on both sides are relatively easy to find.
By the end of 1984, a unique maxi 12" in PS was made for 'Too Much Blood' [0-96902] - another track from 'Undercover - offering an exclusive artwork with 'dance' and 'dub' versions of the song [12:33 & 8:34 respectively].
Interviews
In November 1983, an insert from the 'Undercover' LP would allow you to mail-order a 12"x12" 'fan-club kit' which contained a promo-only 7" with an interview of the band discussing their early musical influences, and their feelings towards their fans.
The kit also included a giant color poster of all 30 Rolling Stones album covers, five 8" x 10" autographed color photos of the band, five oversized color postcards featuring original artworks from Rolling Stones tours and concert posters, reproductions of the Rolling Stones' actual British passports with signatures, photos and special passport holder, a replica backstage pass for the historic 1969 Hyde Park concert, an exclusive letter written by Brian Jones in 1963, an
'Official Fan Club Membership Card', a welcoming letter to the 'Official Fan Club' from Bill Wyman, and a button.
