Germany German 7" discography / The 60's Decca singles

The Rolling Stones - 19th Nervous Breakdown - 'garden' cover • Germany discography: The 60's Decca singles Decca

Early singles were pressed several times and distributed into 5 types of generic picture covers (see table below).

Labels have a wine red background until 1968 then turn to a vivid red.
Back covers were also pretty standardized in the early days: initial '5 heads' cover prints have generic liner notes on the back, later ones sport a discography reminder including the band's first EP. Up to 1965 and 'Satisfaction', rears could show either short [up to 'It's All Over Now' - Decca DL 25144] or long [up to 'Little Red Rooster' - Decca DL 25158] discographies.

It is not before '19th Nervous Breakdown' in 1966 that a first exclusive cover will stand out of the lot. Then 'Have You Seen Your Mother...', 'We Love You', '2000 Light Years From Home' and 'Street Fighting Man' also were German only artworks.

Two DJ promo titled covers were also produced for 'Paint It Black' and 'Jumpin' Jack Flash'.

The Rolling Stones - I Wanna Be Your Man - Decca DL 25129 • Germany discography: The 60's Decca singlesStrangely, Decca Germany picked up 'Money', included on the band debut UK EP, as the B-side of their first single [DL 25129]. The '5 heads' cover with simple liner notes on the back is very rare but beware of counterfeits - as many exist.

* Some copies of 'I Wanna Be Your Man' with the '1st LP' cover have the title misspelt 'Wanna Be Your Man' on label.

The same types of labels and sleeves - 4 in total - were produced for the second single 'Not Fade Away' [DL 25133] initially out in April 1964.

The Rolling Stones - Not Fade Away - Decca DL 25133 • Germany discography: The 60's Decca singles 'It's All Over Now' [DL 25144] versions were more numerous. Since 'Good Times, Bad Times' - its UK B-side - had already been included on the band first EP, Decca picked up 'Tell Me' instead. A choice followed by Finland for its band's debut single, while some European countries like Belgium, Denmark, or Norway kept this first Jagger-Richards composition for an A-side.
Note that the original single was found once into an untitled '5 heads' PS.

Another rare version is the 1965 'Got Live' PS edition but the rarest of all is a misspelled copy of the 'stairs' type titling 'I'ts All Over Now' and housing boxed Decca labels on wine red background [type III].
The Rolling Stones - It's All Over Now - Decca DL 25144 • Germany discography: The 60's Decca singlesThe correctly titled 'stairs' cover should have the new red labels with a b&w Decca logo.

'Time Is On My Side' [DL 25157], the fourth single, knew the same variations as the two first ones, except that the first type of labels with the full gold oval background for Decca had disappeared in the meantime.

The Rolling Stones - Little Red Rooster - promo white labels - DL 25158 • Germany discography: The 60's Decca singles

'Little Red Rooster' [DL 25158] issued just after, and 'The Last Time' [DL 25172] were only issued in the 'first LP' PS.

'Satisfaction' [DL 25200], backed with 'The Under Assistant' as almost everywhere but England, tried to vary this cover a bit, first with a white beam and a pink title [rare], then with a red beam and white title [common]. For some reason, the B-side title was shortened on all releases. This single was issued a third time within the 'Got Live' cover, in automn 1965, when a new generic back cover appeared titling 'Fünf harte Brocken...'.

'Get Off Of My Cloud' [DL 25205] was issued with the 'Got Live' brown beam PS with two different titlings, the rarer version being the one with 'I'm Free' on left side.

With 'Paint It, Black' [DL 25240] came the first 'stage' picture sleeve - which was also used in Denmark, Sweden and Norway - as well as the new boxed red wine 'Decca' labels. A very rare titled 'DJ' cover was issued for promotional purposes, and ideally contain promo white labels copies. The 'Got Live' variation for this single is extremely rare, not to mention its obscure red background version.

The Rolling Stones - Mothers Little Helper - 'stairs' PS • Germany discography: The 60's Decca singles

The next single from 'Aftermath', 'Mothers Little Helper' [DL 25260], was released on 4 different covers, including the 'Got Live' type for the last time. Two color versions of the latter were made, the rarest being again a red background variation tells.
The 'stairs' version of the cover is very scarce, and its first print with the main title in white is maybe the most sought-after record among German collectors.

The Rolling Stones - Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow? • Germany discography: The 60's Decca singlesThe Rolling Stones - Mothers Little Helper • Germany discography: The 60's Decca singles

Nice enough is the initial and exclusive cover for 'Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow?' [DL 25265] - also known as the 'crossed hands' sleeve - which soon left place to a more common 'stairs' cover.

'Let's Spend The Night Together' [DL 25280], as in most countries, was out sporting the 'Between The Buttons' LP shot, but it was also reissued the same year within the 'stage' and 'stairs' covers - these latters appearing for the last time.

The Rolling Stones - We Love You • Germany discography: The 60's Decca singlesThe poor seller 'We Love You' [DL 25306], out in September 1967, opened the era of the new red labels [type III] with the b&w boxed Decca logo.
Some labels variations exist here, as the old fashion of indicating the musical type of the songs [eg: beat, foxtrot, slop, shake] below titles on labels disappeared at that time in Germany. The exclusive psychedelic cover has two versions and typographies, 'Dandelion' being either in black or white.

By December, a rococo cover was conceived for '2000 Light Years From Home' [DL 25321] which was also used later for 'Street Fighting Man' in Sweden. Three variations of this PS were made in Germany: having a white or black [rarer] line between titles, or no line with a different typography.

Beat'Jumpin' Jack Flash' [DL 25340], a classic cover for a classic single, also inspired Decca Germany a DJ-titled sleeve for its promotional version - as 'Paint It, Black' before.

'Honky Tonk Women' [DL 25380] with its 'bar' sleeve was no exception neither, yet 'Street Fighting Man' [DL 25350] in between had a unique cover to Germany, with two title color versions [red, black]. Note that the red titled version was also distributed in Switzerland housing an export F.22825 record pressed in the UK.
